More trails, more fun

Well the visit to Rocksalt and Snails last night was a success. It was a cosy little cafe/bar that was decorated with lots of Harris Tweed and lighting made from deer antlers. We had planned to just have a drink since Illya was cooking dinner but the friendly staff convinced us that the surf and turf platter to share would be a great appetiser. And it was really yummy. The smoked salmon, wild venison salami and oat cakes went well with the wine and beer. The trip out must have been good for the soul as well because I woke up feeling refreshed and ready for my next bike ride despite how tired I’d been on yesterday’s hill climb.

Today was our last day cycling here so we decided to revisit a favourite route called “The Green Mile”; named after the mile long gorgeous single track descent. But you guessed it … we had to climb up first! At least today’s climb was over a longer distance and therefore a bit more gentle on the legs. There was also a lot to look at on the way. This is “Royal Deeside” and the estates are beautifully maintained. Every now and then you cycle past what looks like a regular estate gate and then notice the cameras watching you and wonder who lives there! We also passed a waterfall which, since the last time we visited, has had a salmon ladder fitted alongside it. Amazing to see what has been constructed and to imagine how the fish could possibly swim up that height. We had a good look but couldn’t see any salmon swimming up it.

We made it back before the rain that was forecast and enjoyed a picnic lunch under the awning. It was quite warm despite the rain and we planned to sit out there all afternoon but as we were warned, in windy weather the awning can lift up and risks damaging the side of the van. Although it wasn’t too windy, after a couple of gusts we chickened out and closed it up with a plan to investigate some guy ropes for next time.

Picnic lunch

We’re now enjoying the afternoon reading (and writing blogs) in the van. I did have to brave the weather for a trip to the local shop though – couldn’t spend the evening in without any wine could I? And besides, after all that riding I thought ice cream and cookies for desert was allowed.

Needs must …..
