We’ve set off on our first road trip in the new van. The plan is to travel around the North of Scotland, discovering some new places as well as visiting some old favourites.
Day 1: 90 miles driving; 10k cycling
We set off early afternoon and drove North to Laggan Wolftrax. The forestry commission have developed some fun mountain bike trails in the woods which we haven’t visited for years. They also run a “stay the night” scheme where for a small charge you can stay if you have a self contained camping van. We enjoyed cycling in some late afternoon sunshine before it cooled down to a chilly 1ºC overnight. Sausage stew for dinner warmed us up nicely.

Day 2: 103 miles driving; 16k cycling
Leaving Laggan this morning we drove West to Spean Bridge and then turned North through Fort Agustus and alongside Loch Ness. Stopped on the way for pictures of the impressive dam at the end of Loch Laggan and also took the opportunity to visit the Falls of Moriston. No sight of Nessie today but we were impressed with the Corrimony Carin which is over 4,000 years old.

We were looking forward to going back to Glen Affric as we had a great bikepacking trip here many years ago. The scenery didn’t disappoint even though it was overcast. The midges seem to still be thriving here though despite the “midge season” being over. We had to do the midge dance to get our stuff packed back into the van and then drove with the windows open to try and get rid of them.

Staying at Cannich Woodlands campsite tonight before we continue North tomorrow. Lucky find in the local cafe meant fish and chips for dinner tonight.
