Distillery and a History Tour

If you couldn’t view the photos on yesterday’s blog, try the weblink here. Not sure what happened but hopefully all will work this time.

Today was a touring day. We started at one of Scotland’s rum distilleries. Kit from Ninefold distillery makes his own rum from cane molasses just like they do in the Caribbean where I am from. He also makes an aged rum which he matured in Scottish oak barrels made from trees in his own estate. This has made a lovely, unique but drier tasting rum. Yummy.

Our next stop was Caerlaverock Castle on the South Dumfries and Galloway coast. A fascinating castle in the shape of a triangle largely influenced by the shape of the only bedrock on which it could be built given the surrounding wetlands. This was the site of a major battle between the English and Scots.

We are staying the night at a working farm near New Abbey which is a tiny town but complete with an Abbey and a Corn Mill.

Sweetheart Abbey was built by Lady Dervorguilla to celebrate her husband who died years earlier. She had his heart removed and embalmed and carried it everywhere with her. Both she and the heart are now laid to rest in the Abbey. The monks here built the mill so they had grain to brew beer as it was the only way to hydrate and not die from drinking water in those days!

This campsite is lovely. Very small and a very narrow road to get here. But complete with vintage tractor collection!
