It was a delight to wake up in the morning to a warm, sunny and peaceful pitch at Balloch O Dee. Breakfast in the sun doesn’t happen often in Scotland.
Yesterday we headed West to the furthest point in Dumfries and Galloway, the Mull of Galloway.
Our first stop was Port Logan where we had been told about an unusual attraction run by a rather eccentric character. Port Logan Fish Pond was designed in the 1700’s by the owner of a the estate who wanted access to fresh fish supplies. Pools were created which could be flooded by the tide to keep the fish fed and healthy but with a grate that stopped the fish getting back out. This still operates today but as a tourist attraction.

From Port Logan we decided to cycle to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse at the most southerly tip of the peninsula. This was a 14km scenic route along quiet roads lined by the healthiest sheep and cows we have ever seen. And palm trees ?!? It certainly felt more tropical than expected. At the lighthouse cafe I was happy to enjoy an ice-cream in the cafe to cool down before the return ride.

Our home last night was a disused helicopter base at Wig Bay north of Stranraer. Each “arm” of the runway is a camping van pitch so the vans are really far apart and you have a great view of the ferries moving between Stranraer and Dublin. The birds don’t like Illya’s drone though 🤣.
