More cycling and sightseeing

On the second day we were at New Abbey where we cycled from the campsite to Mabie Forest to doa another of the 7 Stanes rides. The route there was entertaining given the number of tractors we had to pass on the single track back road.

I have to take back what I said about Forestry Land Scotland giving up on their recreational activities. Unlike Ae, the trails at Mabie were really well maintained and we even passed some guys in the process of cutting back the grass verges. And the best surprise was that the cafe was open. We enjoyed a lovely coffee and ice cream.

On Thursday the weather turned much more variable and so we abandoned our plan to cycle at Dalbeattie and went sightseeing again. First we replenished our food supplies at Kilnford Farm shop where we also got some lovely cheeses. Then we visited Threave Castle. This castle is accessed via a short walk through some wetlands and then a short boat ride across the river onto an island. You ring a bell to send someone over to pick you up. This area was full of amazing birds. We saw the biggest Osprey nest we have ever seen (better view through the binoculars than the photo). And we saw a Peregrine Falcon sitting on the castle. Evidently she has been there for 11 years but recently her mate disappeared and she was very distressed and calling for him (or a replacement?!?) and no trip to Dumfries and Galloway is complete without seeing the belted Galloways. Distinct with the white belt around their middles. This is farming country.

Last night we stayed at a community run campsite in the town of Kirkcudbright (you’ll never pronounce that right!). This must have been a really important town in the past as it had a castle, harbour, tower and many amazing old town houses.

Despite 2 nights staying in campsites, evidently neither had a mirror near a sink. Good thing I had a small mirror so Illya could shave in the van 🤣.

Today’s weather is not much improved but we have decided to cycle Dalbeattie anyway. It will be an adventure drying out tonight….
