Yesterday morning we went for a walk around the Seaboard villages where there is a surprising amount of history. The mermaid of the north is linked to sailor folklore. The salmon sculptures reflect the salmon fishing history. The Shandwick stone is an impressive Pictish artefact covered in inscriptions.
We then headed north to Golspie to ride the Highland wildcat trails. The view of the Duke of Sutherland monument (known as locally as “the mannie”) reminded us how high we’d have to climb to get up there! But on the e-bikes the climb was less tiring and the views were amazing. Great fun although the downhill from the top was tough and an e-bike doesn’t help in this scenario…
We weren’t expecting much from the local community camping site as it was in a business park but we were pleasantly surprised. It has been thoughtfully designed with breaks between the pitches planted with loads of fruit trees. It is well spaced out and quite pretty. Would stay here again.
Today is admin (laundry and supermarket) day as well as sightseeing on the way back south to Cromarty.
