I am not sure this lovely part of Scotland deserves such a negative sounding name. Yesterday we visited the Black Isle taking in several of the tourist attractions and spending the night at Cromarty.
The Black Isle Berries was a great little farm shop to visit. Although famous for its locally grown fruit, we were more impressed by the range and quality of the vegetables. If we lived locally I’d shop here often.
We’d previously visited the Black Isle Brewery so this time we decided to check out the Cromarty Brewery instead. They had some excellent beers and the artwork on the bottles was quite impressive too.
We came across the Egg Shop at the side of the road and just had to take a look. It seemed to us an odd concept to have a giant vending machine for eggs but there it was!
Cromarty is right on the Northern tip of the Black Isle and is a picturesque little town. We enjoyed the croissants from the bakery this morning and were excited to discover a highland version of the cumin Gouda cheese we love from Holland.
We cycled out to see McFarquor’s Cave but unfortunately to get the best views through the rock arch we would have had to scramble down a very steep slope so we decided to make do with the higher up but less impressive views. The cycle back along the wheat field has achieved an extreme exfoliation on my legs (ouch).
The community campsite was perfect. A real sun trap with great views of the sea. I kept my eyes peeled for dolphins but no luck. Hopefully we will have more luck tonight at Fortrose.
This morning we cycled at Learnie Red Rocks mountain biking trails. So much fun to discover the local (unofficial) trails winding through the woods.
